THE LOST SHEEP
Luke 15:4-7 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing, and when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”
In this parable, Jesus likens us to lost sheep. He describes also His great love for mankind. You see my friend, it is not you seeking Him; but He, the Savior has been out seeking you in the wilderness of this sinful world.
Men and women might seek a religion to belong to; a particular denomination in which they will take membership in. They might like the traditions this particular denomination holds to, or their belief system of dos and don’ts might appeal to them. Many believe in their particular church because their parents have always done so. They feel safe and peaceful; they can basically control their life and future. They are not really looking for Jesus. If this describes you, then you are one of the lost sheep.
Then there are those who are deep in sinful lifestyles and don’t care about their eternal souls; they go on sinning and laugh at the gospel when they hear it. Our scripture reading today in Luke tells us that He is still out seeking after that one lost sheep. His precious Holy Spirit is convicting and telling them of the judgment of God that is ahead for them if they don’t repent. He might come to them through one of His faithful followers, a born again Christ; or perhaps through the printed page, such as this Weekly Word.
Dear one, have you been running from Him for quite a while? Each time you hear His invitation to come to Him and be born from above, you say: “O no thank you, I am a Presbyterian, or a Roman Catholic, or a Methodist.” Having a particular religious persuasion, does not mean you have eternal life from Jesus. He said in John 3:3 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” To be born again is to be washed of your sins by the blood of Jesus and be regenerated in your spirit man by the Holy Spirit: “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” Titus 3:5.
When a lost sheep is found by Jesus, He says in this parable that He not only rejoices, but all of heaven rejoices. Precious one, He will keep calling you until your final breath; after that, it’s too late. Come to Him today.
Prayer for Salvation: Jesus I am coming home to you. I repent of all my sins and turn my back on them and this sinful world. Come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. Amen.
