WEEKLY WORD

Written by Pastor Sue Lynch

    THE POWER OF ONE LIFE

Luke 1:17 “He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

At certain times in our lives, many of us go through the emotional unprofitable game of: “my life does not count for anything.”  Have you ever been there?  Or the unprofitable one of: “If only I could be like so and so, or I had their money; then I could do something with my life.”

There was a certain priest name Zacharias and he and his wife Elizabeth lived in a place called Judaea.  They were very old and had no children; Elizabeth was called barren.  They loved the Lord God Almighty with all their heart and soul.  They were faithful to Him in all their ways.  The Bible says they were blameless, not without sin, but blameless.  This means they kept the Old Testament Law.  One day as Zacharias was at the Temple doing his priestly duty, an angel named Gabriel announced to him that Elizabeth would conceive in her old age and bear him a son.  Of course the dear old man could not believe this news and was stricken speechless until the day that these things would come to pass.  This was his punishment for doubting the word of the Lord.

Now this miracle took place and John was born to this older couple.  His ministry was known even before he came into the world: “And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse” Malachi 4:6.  This is the Old Testament promise that our scripture in Luke refers to.  John was in the heart of God to do a great work for the Lord.  He was to preach the coming of the Lord and get people’s hard hearts softened and broken so they would repent.  When Jesus came they would be ready to receive Him.

But did you know that you are also in the heart of God?  Your life is no mistake; you are here for a purpose: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you” Jeremiah 1:5.  Your life can be used for the Lord just as John’s was.  You can tell someone today about Jesus and turn their heart to the Father and their disobedient heart to the wisdom of the Lord.  Tell how Jesus loves them, died for them, so they can be saved.  You can prepare the way of the Lord, so when He comes they will go with Him to heaven.  The power of one life! Yours!  Amen!
