BUILDING ON THE ROCK
Matthew 7: 24, 26 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock…But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.”
Jesus is teaching us a most powerful word in these scriptures today; He is speaking what is called a parable. A parable is a short story using illustrations to tell a deep truth. This story is called the ‘Parable of the Two Buildings.”
He likens a man or woman who hears His Word, and not only hears it but does it, actually puts it into practice in their everyday life; a person who builds his house upon a rock. The rock Jesus is referring to is Himself, He is referred to in scripture as a rock: “The Eternal is my crag [a steep or rugged cliff or rock face], my stronghold, my deliverer—he is mine” 2 Samuel 22:2. (Moffat translation of the Bible). He never changes, or shifts His word to mean something else to fit the circumstance. He is eternal and remains our stronghold that we can stand upon and trust that deliverance will always be there.
In this parable, Jesus went on to describe what life would be like if you choose to listen and do His Word: “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock” Matthew 7:25. Life can be hard; it rains on everyone, the good and the bad. For some floods will come, great winds of trials and tribulations will beat against some, seeking to destroy families, health, etc. But what Christ is declaring is; if you build your everyday life on Him and His Word, putting into practice what He teaches, you will not go down under the storms of life. He, the Rock, will be your fortress that you can run to and hide from the storm; your deliverer who will take you through safely. He will hold you up because your life is built on a Rock; He is your foundation, solid and sure.
On the other hand, He declares in verse 26 of our scripture reading today, that if you hear His Words and do not do them, you choose to do as the world does, you choose to do your own thing; you will not make it. Here is what He says this person shall be like: “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall”
Matthew 7:26, 27. You see beloved, the Lord calls this world we live in, our society, our culture, as uncertain and weak as sand. We have all seen a sandy beach and how the waves of the sea move the sand so easily. Jesus wants our lives to be strong and productive. We must build our lives upon Him and His Word. You can be confined to a bed and still build your house, your life upon Jesus the Rock. He can shine through you to others who need to hear His truth. Amen.
