WEEKLY WORD

Written by Pastor Sue Lynch

                HAVE YOU BEEN ADOPTED YET?

Romans 8:14-16 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

Adoption is in the mind of God.  He created it and set it in the heart and mind of man.  We read in the Old Testament that Moses was adopted by the Egyptian princess, Pharoah’s daughter.  He was raised in Egypt’s finest schools and given all that was due to a royal child.

The word adopt simply means: to take for your own or as your own choice: to embrace, to accept formally or officially; to approve.  When a child is adopted, he or she is formally and officially chosen by the parent, embraced and fully accepted as one of the family.  Given their name and all the benefits and legal rights to the family’s estate and financial wealth.  This is a voluntary relationship, not one that has been forced against someone’s will.

What a beautiful picture this is of God the Father in our scripture today.  The third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit does the adopting for the Father.  He is the agency, if you please, that handles all of the legal formalities.  We read: “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption…” Romans 8:14,15.

He leads us to the adoption and He is referred to as the Spirit of adoption.  You see when you repent of your sins and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your only hope of eternal salvation, it is the work of the Holy Spirit that has brought you to this decision.  He has revealed the Lord Jesus to you and has shown you that you are a sinner in need of a Savior.  He then, upon your repentance and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus, adopts you, spiritually into the family of God.  How it happens in the spiritual realm no one knows, He is God, it is His work, not mans.  Because we have received the Spirit Himself, the Spirit of adoption, we suddenly realize that we have a heavenly Father, and we can cry out to Him, Abba (which is Hebrew for Daddy) Father!  We are no longer under God’s judgment as a sinner, an alien, but are now a part of His great family: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” v.v.16,17.  All that Jesus has is ours and will come to us through faith and prayer and fellowship with the Father.  Jesus provided it all when He suffered and died on Calvary for our sins.  We are fully forgiven and received into the awesome family of God.  No more fear and guilt, just joy, peace and love.

Are you adopted yet?  What are you waiting for?  Jesus said: “Whosoever believes will be saved…”  that includes anyone, that includes you!
