THE GOD OF MERCY
Exodus 34:6,7 “And the Lord passed before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty…”
The word mercy in this portion of scripture, comes from the Hebrew word (Chanan, pronounced khaw-nan’) and is a prim root word, meaning to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior; to favor, to be gracious, to have pity upon.
In our scripture reading today, we are reading the voice of God recorded by Moses, when Moses met God at Mt Sinai. Moses had asked God if he would show Himself to him. God granted his request but in a different manner than what Moses had asked for. He saw only God’s back parts but not His face. When the Lord descended in the cloud, He proclaimed who He was to Moses, and what His ministry was to man. He declared that He was merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in goodness and truth. In other words, God is merciful to man and His creation, even when they are miserable and wicked to Him. We have read that the word mercy means to bend or humble oneself and be kind to one that is inferior to oneself. God who is our Creator, humbled Himself and became a man. Stripped Himself of all power and died a cruel death on the cross to become our substitute for sin. Why? So we could be forgiven and enjoy fellowship with the Father, Son and Spirit now and in the eternal world to come.
God is gracious and extends His mercy to whosoever will receive Him and walk with Him. However, He added in Exodus 34:7 that, He will not pardon the guilty if they turn away His mercy. In other words, without repenting and humbling yourself to ask for forgiveness and receive His dear Son as your Savior, He will not be able to clear away your sins, your transgressions. Though He is merciful and gracious, He has set His plan of salvation in motion and nothing can change it. Good works will not clear you with Him, nor belonging to the right religious institution. Jesus said it this way: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” John 14:6.
Do you think you deserve God’s mercy? Well, you or I do not. It is only by His gracious love that we are welcome to come to Him for cleansing and forgiveness. Humble yourself and call upon the mercy of God today and He will hear your humble cry and answer you out of His mercy and grace which is in Christ Jesus: “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ” John 1:17. Grace is another word for mercy. Call upon the God of mercy today and He will answer. Amen!
